Maria Quintana

I am an abstract painter based in Paisley, Scotland. Although I consider myself essentially self-taught, in the last decade I have undertaken an intense training through workshops and courses provided by institutions like the Edinburgh College of Art and excellent artists like Nancy Hillis. Today my practice is shaped by enquiry and experimentation and my works have been exhibited at the Scottish Drawing Competition (2017), Paisley Art Institute (2018 and 2019) and Edinburgh Macmillan Art Show (2019).
I work mainly with acrylics and mark-making tools, and my preferred substrate is paper. My inspiration is three-fold: colour itself, the organic forms of Nature and the stream of my unconscious. My paintings communicate different moods, from the bold and energetic to the meditative and calmed. I aim to move the viewer’s spirit as music or poetry do – not through logic or reason, but through personal experience and sensibility.
